Chapter 13

W illow and Lou had only been away from the car for half an hour at the most, but it had been enough time for it to grow chilly inside. Willow turned on the car and set the heater to full blast while they sat there.

“Did you hear what Omer said about other neighbors?” Lou asked. “Do you think he meant Chase, or are there more people angry with Nina, on this street?”

“It’s pretty odd that he didn’t answer.” Willow nodded excitedly. “And that’s even without considering all the people Nina may have angered that don’t live on this street.”

Lou pressed her lips together but didn’t say what was on her mind.

Willow glanced back at her, noticing the change. “Oh, but the mystery texter mentioned the killer was a neighbor. Right. I forgot.”

“It’s okay,” Lou said. “My mystery informant could still be the killer, trying to take us in the wrong direction.”

“Right,” Willow said. “But I can’t help but wonder if your mystery texter isn’t being vague because of a different reason, not because they’re the killer. The line about not being able to trust their eyes or brain. I’m no expert, but doesn’t that kind of sound like someone who might struggle with mental health issues?”

“I wondered the same thing,” Lou agreed. “But I’m not an expert either.”

“You know who is, though?” Willow asked.

Lou’s eyes widened. Of course, it was someone she saw almost daily. “Forrest,” she said, naming one of her regulars, a local psychologist. “He won’t be able to divulge names of his clients, but he might give us insight into how to get more information out of this person.”

“That would be a great idea,” Willow said pointedly, catching the fact they’d fallen back into sleuthing mode. “If we were getting involved.”

“Which we’re not,” Lou agreed.

It was easy when there was information right in front of them, but she’d made a promise to stay out of the case.

Willow peered through the windshield. “Now, where should we go next? Because I think they’re going to think we’re weird if we sit here any longer.”

Lou chuckled, but she had an idea. “What if we try talking to Peggy Lee Milton again?”

Willow’s eyes lit up. “Really?”

“She didn’t even hear your proposal last time,” Lou said. “Let me try talking to her.”

People had often told Lou that she had a calming air about her. Maybe she could make a difference by helping turn Willow’s dream into a reality. If she could, she wanted to try.

Willow gripped the steering wheel with excitement and started driving in that direction.

If possible, the foliage was even more beautiful than it had been on Tuesday. Willow wound through the farmland roads as they left Lakeside County and ventured up into Skagit County. During the summer, the valley’s tulips were the stars, luring thousands of tourists, with their vibrant colors. But the rich auburns, mustards, and tones of burnt Sienna felt just as impressive to Lou.

They pulled up to Milton Farm just as they had the first time, but both women got out of the car this time.
